The Fastest Way to Gain Authority in Your Niche and Make Sales

gain authority

When you’re the “new kid on the block” and nobody knows who you are… it can be EXTREMELY difficult to make sales.

Why? Because people like to buy from someone they see as an authority or as an expert because they are credible.

They get the money, the new clients, and they get the sales because they have the results to prove it.

Wanna know the fastest way to gain authority in your niche?

What if I told you it’s not as hard as you think it is, and that you can do it faster than you thought possible?

If you’re a newbie, or just getting started in your business you don’t have any authority. Nobody knows who you are because there’s nothing to write home about yet. I promise you, there’s a solution.

In this blog post I’m going to share with you the 8 simple steps I’ve personally used to gain authority in my niche, build a 6-figure business from scratch in less than a year, and cultivate a tribe of wildly responsive fans, followers, and customers.

Lets get started.

The More Specific the Better

When you’re just starting out the temptation is there to try to be all things to all people – which is not only highly unprofitable but completely scatters your energy.

For example, if you’re in the health and wellness industry be SPECIFIC about your BEST skill set talent. Are you a nutrition specialist? Are you a high-performance athletic trainer? Do you help people create action plans to better health?

What is it that you LOVE and comes most EASILY to you?

Do that. Start there. If you want to branch out later, you can, but you have to focus to get going.

Get Results and Tell Your Story

Become a product of the product. If you’re a relationship coach and you’re helping people cultivate rich and intimate connections with their partner – you need to have the results to back it up! SHOW PEOPLE that what you have works because it’s worked for you already.

Nobody wants to hire a coach that doesn’t have (or hasn’t had) the results!

Getting Practical:

How can you demonstrate and show the marketplace that you are the expert?

  • Numbers – How many clients? How many pounds? How many sales? How many leads? Take screenshots!
  • Leaderboards – Nothing speaks volumes than your name on a leaderboard. Capture those moments (see below)
  • Help Others Get Results – Written, audio, or video testimonials show outsiders that you mean business. You’ll find tons of examples if you just look around this site.
  • Share Your Latest Victories – Doesn’t matter how big or small, just keep building a bigger story.

Obviously once you create these pieces, you have to learn how to market them. We’ll talk about that in a minute.

Become the Subject Matter Expert

They say knowledge is power. Not quite, but it is the first step. People want to pay for services by people who know more than they do.

Are you reading books and articles from your niche? Are you listening to audio and watching videos from other experts in your niche?

If you dedicate 30-60 minutes EVERY DAY to this practice, you will be surprised at how quickly your confidence, knowledge, and motivation will grow in just a few short months.

If you don’t know what you’re talking about, good luck getting paid.

Bonus Tip: Set up Google Alerts for keywords in your niche and you’ll get a daily, weekly, or monthly report of all the content being published on the web in your subject area.

Be the Go-Giver

Once you have the knowledge, what do you do with it? Give it away.

How will people know you’re the authority when you haven’t shared with them what you know?

I made videos every day for an entire year back in 2010 just sharing my experiences. That’s all it took to grow my online network from 400 –> over 5,000 in one year.

bob burg headshotYou may have heard of Bob Burg, author of the Go-Giver and Go-Givers sell more – if you haven’t you need to connect with him on twitter and grab one of his books.

One of the things Bob talks about in his books is the idea of reciprocity. When you give to others freely, the natural tendency others have is to give back. It’s just the way it works. Don’t give with the intention to get. Lead with value.

People will give back their respect, their friendship, and their resources (like money, connections, etc.)

Getting Practical:

One of the best things you can do to gain authority in your niche is to make videos about what you’ve learned and post them to the various social networks, and even to your blog. If you don’t have a blog yet, you can get one set up today right here.

This quick video is a GREAT example of this idea in action. Study how it’s done!

Put on Live Events

The moment you decide to put on a live event, your credibility skyrockets, especially on the internet. Nobody knows who you are… but you are the person with the microphone. Which means you have all the power and people assume you know what you’re talking about. Use that as leverage.

Remember, you must be a go-giver and lead with value in mind, not sales.

Getting Practical:

Do something weekly. Your consistency will help you to gain authority in your niche extremely fast.

Here’s a couple of ideas:

  • Telecall – There’s tons of free services out there that allow you to have your own conference number that people from around the world can call into and listen to what you have to share. We use freeconferencecallHD.com.
  • Hangouts on Air – Similar to a webinar, you can create a live stream hosted by Google through YouTube and broadcast your message around the globe. You can use it with your webcam like Skype, and also share your screen for more technical training. It’s free to use and you can find out more here.

Here’s an Example: Google Hangout with Avram Gonzales, Nikki Magdalena, and Multi-Millionaire David Wood

Be the Hub

I went to an event this past November in Austin, hosted by Yanik Silver where I learned first-hand how he has built a MASSIVE following and some of the most ridiculous events in his industry of internet marketing.

He’s a humble guy to begin with, but claims that he is not really that great at internet marketing – he just knows people.

This is his secret: He knows how to bring people together, and when he does it, people automatically see him as the authority.

Here it is in Action:

  • He created a worldwide mastermind with millionaire business owners called Maverick. They get together and do fun stuff like skydive in Dubai and collaborate on projects where appropriate. All Yanik does is show up and put on the event. And people respect him, refer him, and love him for it. (Even though many of the people in his mastermind make more money than he does!)
  • He created Underground – an internet marketing training event that sells out every year because it attracts high caliber people, and high caliber speakers.

How do you mimic this when you’re just starting out?

Get on meetup.com and put together a monthly get-together based around your niche.

Or, create a group on Facebook or LinkedIn, or a community page on Google Plus and invite others to join, connect, discuss, and collaborate.

You own the group because you started it and people automatically see you as the authority in your niche.

Piggyback on the Success of Others

Sir Isaac Newton said:

“If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”

I think the best way to share this is through a quick video.

Lawrence Tam, the guy giving us a shout out on stage on this video, is a well-known industry giant and million dollar earner in our company.

This makes us look really good, would you agree?

Whatever you do, do your best to network with people who are more successful than you. It’s the fastest way to gain authority when people from the outside see you rubbing shoulders with giants.

The Final Key to Gain Authority

If nobody knows who you are, you are destined to fail. That’s business and marketing 101.

Everything I talked about in this blog, if you do it consistently for long enough – you will gain authority beyond your wildest dreams.

But I know that not everyone is patient. You want results yesterday.

So here’s what you have to do:

Get a Blog, and Learn How to Market

start a blog

You will exponentialize your reach, influence, and authority when you have a blog (which is really just a website that’s easy to customize, user friendly, and simple to update.

If you want to have results fast in your industry, you need to learn the 5 ways to make money online in any business. It’s a free video which you can gain access to by clicking here.

It’ll teach you the bare essentials that are necessary to market your business, and when you’re ready you can start your blog here and take our blogging bootcamp.

Brilliant advice Avram. Live events is a bit daunting, but with team leaders like you, Nikki, and my sponsor Sandy Leveque, there's nothing I can't do. I just joined T.H.I.A. yesterday and have been absorbing this information at lightning speed. The wheels are in motion. And since you asked, my area of expertise is helping people cut the 9-5 cord so they can live the freelance writing/editing life.

Such great tips Avram, thanks for sharing this!! My favorite segment is the SHARE YOUR STORY one. It's SO true that in any kind of marketing in today's very noisy online world, truly the best way for us to share with others and provide them with authenticity is to share of yourself.

Avram, I never thought I would have said this to a grungy looking guy like you but, "you have modeled VERY PROFESSSIONAL behavior for me over the last 1.5 years." Thanks for being a go-giver

so much stellar information here!! I see alot of people underestimate the impact THEY can have because so much of society makes us believe only celebrities or politicians can really make an impact. The fact is EACH of us can and your blog is a beautiful blueprint for making that happen! My area of expertise is spreading seeds of change! I used to do this as a political campaigner/activist...now I love helping and seeing people do it via the internet /videos / their actions and through becoming the change they'd like to see!

Forgot to tell you MY area of expertise. I help YOU create a part of YOUR BUSINESS that WORKS, even when you DON'T. I discovered when my Mom was in the hospital for kidney failure and I had teenage boys at home I was worried about feeding if I didn't get back to work. And I have a great job! We all need to create income streams that pay us, even when we can't work!
